  Quest Name

Create an interactive map to show different building types in BC

Quest Description

Create an interactive map using the “Microsoft BuildingFootprints dataset (Canada)”. The map could be built by using python library Folium.

People may use this map to query the location of specific building types (e.g., residential , or overlay an climate zone map to estimate building energy use)

  Skills Required/Preferred

Required skills

  • Intermediate-level python programming

Preferred skills

  • Experience with Folium library and .geojson files

  Rewards

  • A public demo showcasing python programming skills and domain knowledge
  • Python skill

BPI research publication landscape

Quest Description

To show: (1) a wide coverage in different fields (x-axis), (2) contribution (e.g. combined citation # in a given field, y-axis), (3) significance (e.g., total # of publications in each field, z-axis)

  Skills Required/Preferred

Required skills

  • Intermediate-level python programming

Preferred skills

  • Experience with web scrawling

  Rewards

  • A public demo showcasing python programming skills and domain knowledge

  Quest Name

Identify the “foundational” references cited by many articles on a particular topic of interest

Quest Description

Insights from the existing literature form a critical foundation for new research to improve the status quo of the domain. Nonetheless, it also happens that many recent studies will cite the same reference for the key parameter(s) of interest.

Being able to identify these foundational references is beneficial for two reasons: (1) to evaluate their influence on the outcome of the studies, (2) to replace them with updated references, if appropriate.

  Skills Required/Preferred

Required skills

  • Intermediate-level python programming

Preferred skills

  • Experience with “ConnectedPapers” API or similar

  Rewards

  • A public demo showcasing python programming skills and domain knowledge
  • Python skill

  Quest Name

Combining machine learning with material flow analysis to predict the demand for end-of-life treatment of renewable energy systems

Quest Description

Renewable energy systems, such as photovoltaics and wind turbines, are essential for decarbonizing our energy use. Nonetheless, the production of renewable energy systems is often material-intensive. Accordingly, treating the materials from decommissioned renewable energy systems may become an emerging issue.

As a first step, an analytical capacity should be established to predict the generation of materials from renewable energy systems after their service lifetime are reached.

  Skills Required/Preferred

Required skills

  • Intermediate-level python programming
  • Proficient with object detection and image segmentation algorithms

Preferred skills

  • Working experience with material flow analysis (MFA)

  Rewards

  • A public demo showcasing python programming skills and domain knowledge
  • A public demo showcasing skills in object detection and image segmentation
  • Python skill
  • MFA skill
